Mark Kermode on Piracy – he’s wrong about the Exorcist being the greatest movie ever made, he’s wrong about The Big Lebowski and Burn After Reading, but he’s dead right about this.
Don’t get me wrong – simultaneous multi-platform release will NOT kill piracy. BUT it will massively dent it.
Think about it. You love the sound of Contagion I mean, who wouldn’t.
That movie is released in cinemas the US in September, in the UK in October. It will be a huge hit with torrenters everywhere.
But imagine if on that date in September, Contagion were available in the cinema, on blu-ray to rent or buy and to download to your pc or ps3. (cos you don’t own an xbox, I mean, don’t be silly.) imagine if the cost of each of these was about the same.
You could torrent it for free and it would look like shit (unless it’s awards season, natch) or you could get it looking great in the comfort of your own home for some money.
You’d buy it rather than torrenting it, wouldn’t you? Well, even if yu wouldn’t a fuckload of people would, trust me.
I cannot explain the angle I have on this issue, for fear of prosecution.
